Glossary
Board Books - are for preschoolers,
ages 2-4, have less than 500 words, and are 16 pages.
Clips - samples of your published
work.
Defamation - injury to a living person
or organization through the written or spoken work-which is
untrue. If what you say/write is true, it can't be
defamation.
Easy Readers or Early Readers - these
are the first books children will read by themselves, usually
written for ages 4-7.
Editor
Associate editor - often screens the slush
pile
Copy Editor - A copy editor is the person
who takes on the manuscript after it's been written and edited,
and goes through it carefully to make sure the spelling,
punctuation, and grammar are correct, everything conforms to
the Chicago Manual of Style, the headings and subheadings are
consistent throughout, etc.
Editorial Assistant - may help screen the
slush pile
Editor-in-chief - usually oversees a group
of related magazines published by the same publisher
Executive editor -
Managing editor - usually reviews queries
and manuscripts, making decisions and assignments
Senior Editor - in some publishing houses,
reviews, proposals, queries and manuscripts, making decisions
and assignments
Filler - a short piece of writing
(usually under 1,000 words) used to fill in small spaces on a
magazine or newspaper page.

Libel - the written act of
defamation
Mass Market - small, rack-size
paperbacks
Picture Books - these usually have
500-2,000 words, are either 24 or 32 pages, and are filled with
four-color pictures.
Query - a letter to a publisher or
agent that describes the book you have completed or are
writing.
Remainders - unsold books that
publisher no longer wish to store
SASE - A self-addressed, stamped
envelope.
Sidebar - a short piece of writing
that accompanies an article and often set apart in some sort of
box or border. This may be a different perspective on the
topic, an elaboration, a listing of helpful resources, or other
explanatory material.
Slander - the verbal act of
defamation.
Slush Pile -
Trade Publishing Market - books sold
to the 'trade' - booksellers and/or wholesalers who supply
them.
