The Publishing Process
Information about the Publishing
Process

It is
helpful to understand,
that publishing is not a
game of words, it's a
game of numbers. Whether
you write to an article
or of books, it has to
make money or the
publisher won't stay in
business very long. Many
beginning writers write
the book they want to
write, rather than a book
an editor wants. There is
a difference.

“We publish about 35 books a year but I get about 2000
inquiries.” - Dan Penwell, AMG Publishers, Children's
Writer, October 2005
The number of Christian books published this year [2006]
will reach about 12,000. Meanwhile, the number of manuscripts
submitted to nearly 300 publishers is at 250,000. - the
2006 Christian Writer's Market
Guide
The bottom line drives decisions. Thomas Nelson says, “We
are focused on publishing only those titles that will reach a
substantial number of readers and contribute a substantial
amount of revenue and profit.” - Christian Retailing,
July 3, 2006
Here are two great quotes by Pat Walsh, an editor,
independent publisher, reporter, and the author of 78
Reasons Why Your Book May Never Be Published and 14 Reasons Why
It Just Might:
“The publishing industry, for all its flaws, respects
the serious writer, regardless of genre. We seek authors
dedicated to their work, professional in manner, and with
optimistic but reasonable expectations. These are not easy
people to find, mainly because every one thinks they are
one of those people. This is not true.”
“Not much is sadder then an entire manuscript, whether
it be a novel, memoir, or narrative fiction, about a
subject no one cares about. There are plenty of them out
there being sent around, generating a blizzard of rejection
slips.”
