Tips to Making Your Poetry Great

“Poetry is good because it flexes muscles you don't use often enough.” - Ray Bradbury, Zen and the Art of Writing

Writing poetry requires tools. Make sure you have a good thesaurus, dictionary, an anthology of poetry, and a book about the forms and conventions of poetry.

“Write. If you get published, good. If someone decides to pay you, that's good too because you've got to eat. But the deal is this - you have to write.” - Andrea King Collier, The Writer, October 2005

“Poetic voice is rooted in the use and repetition of specific elements-technical elements that make a poem recognizable as belonging to one poet. I've identified these elements as grammar and syntax, form, music, subject matter, and, last, magic-the elusive connection between a reader and a poet that transcends the work.” - Laurie Zupan, Writer's Digest, May 2005

“Poetry is the opening and closing of a door, leaving those who look through to guess about what is seen during a moment.” - Carl Sandburg, The Atlantic Monthly

Use a meter to get the right beat, and listen to syllables and the rhythmic beat of sentences.
